Bengaluru’s Harrow School Wins World’s Best Designed School Award

  • A proud moment for Indian architecture and design excellence making waves worldwide.
  • The only school to be recognised in the Citation Awards category globally.

Global Recognition for Indian Innovation

New Delhi, 24th September 2025: Harrow International School, Bengaluru, designed by CP Kukreja Architects (CPKA), has been recognised as one of the winners in the Architecture – Educational Buildings category at the LOOP Design Awards 2025. Selected from over 550 entries across 49 countries, this honour underscores the project’s contribution to advancing institutional design by weaving together heritage, ecology, and pedagogy.

Harrow’s First Campus in India

Extending the legacy of a 450-year-old institution, Harrow’s debut in India reinterprets its classical identity within Bengaluru’s ecological and cultural setting. The masterplan is structured around a preserved natural water channel that functions both as a landscape feature and as a spatial organiser. Academic, residential, cultural, and athletic facilities are designed in dialogue with courtyards, shaded pathways, and landscaped spines, creating a seamless continuum between built and natural environments.

Leadership Perspectives

Dr. Aseem Chauhan, Chairman, Governing Body, Harrow International School Bengaluru, stated:

“Education is as much about the spaces in which it unfolds as it is about the curriculum it imparts. At Harrow, architecture becomes a catalyst for learning—where preserved creeks, courtyards, and walkways inspire curiosity and community. This recognition affirms our belief that schools must nurture not only academic excellence but also cultural awareness, ecological responsibility, and global citizenship.”

Dikshu C. Kukreja, Managing Principal, CPKA, added:

“Architecture for education must do more than provide infrastructure; it must cultivate imagination, community, and resilience. At Harrow Bengaluru, we aimed to create a dialogue between heritage and modernity, embed sustainability in every design gesture, and let the environment itself become a teacher. This award reaffirms architecture’s role in shaping futures, not just buildings.”

Design Highlights

  • Ecological Integration: The creek acts as a unifying thread, with bridges, shaded walkways, and green spines enhancing campus life.

  • Contextual Identity: Locally sourced materials reinterpret Harrow’s iconic brick architecture while drawing inspiration from Bengaluru’s palaces, gardens, and lakes.

  • Iconic Landmark: A 30-metre-high clock tower serves as both a symbolic anchor and an infrastructural innovation, consolidating services within a vertical core to reduce ecological impact.

  • Sustainable Systems: Bioswales, pedestrian networks, and north-south building orientation optimise natural daylight and ventilation. Passive cooling strategies and water-sensitive planning ensure complete rainwater management. The campus has been awarded a USGBC Platinum rating for sustainability.
